New Delhi World Book Fair Official App

New Delhi World Book Fair (NDWBF) is one of the biggest event in India for book lovers. It is organized every year by National Book Trust since last 41 years. For the current year (2015), it is presently going on in Pragati Maidan from 14 to 22 February.  Many national and international book publishers showcase their published books in the fair.

This year National Book Trust has launched a mobile application to assist the visitors. For now, the application is available only for Android platform. The app is being divided into different sections as below.

  • About Us – Details about the New Delhi World Book Fair
  • Exhibitors – Details of publishers based on their name, products, halls and language
  • Venue – Map of various halls at the venue and route guidance
  • Event – Calendar of many events happening during the fair
  • Share App – Option of sharing app via default Android share menu
  • Coupon – Discount coupons for purchasing the books in the fair
  • Near By – Nearby attractions and route guidance
  • QR Code – Know about exhibitors by scanning the QR code
  • Locate Exhibitor – Locate an exhibitor
  • My Favorite – Favorite exhibitors for taking reference in future
  • Social Media -Links for social media pages of the fair
  • Feedback

Look and feel of the app is neither very great nor very bad, it can be called just okay. When I run the app for first time after installing, it asked for registration i.e. Name, Mobile and Email. I think registration details should not be mandatory as I doubt many people will exit the app at this point. I myself has put some garbage values as I did not feel any need to give my personal information to the app. I liked the Venue section of the app much as it gives details of the halls and what’s inside the hall. Pragati Maidan is very big area and the app helped me in finding the hall and stalls of my interest.

Overall the app is good. I would recommend you to install the app if you are planning to attend the New Delhi World Book Fair.

State Bank of India launches Freedom Plus Mobile Application

State Bank of India is the biggest bank of India and has used technology in very good manner to reach its customers. It has a very good online banking portal for many years. It was also front runner in developing mobile application for doing banking transactions on mobile phone. I still remember first application for Java enabled mobile phones launched my SBI many years back. As smartphones started becoming popular SBI has launched ‘State Bank Freedom’ application for all major mobile platforms including Android, iOS, Blackberry, Windows Phone. While the user interface of iOS and Windows Phone applications was very good, the same can’t be said for Android. The application was very old style and mostly text based with very little images.

Recently, for the good sake of Android users, SBI has launched new application for Android mobiles which has been named ‘State Bank Freedom Plus’. As its clear from its name, it is definitely a plus from the older application. It has a very modern user interface with colorful and good looking menu icons. Images have been throughout the application which gives very good impression for the user.

The application has various sections as below.

  • My Accounts
    • Show case overview of 4 account variant (Transaction / Deposit /Loan / PPF)
    • Selection of account number
    • Detailed account information
    • Last 5 transaction
  • Banking
    • Funds Transfer (Own A/c)
    • Intra-Bank (Within SBI) Transfer
    • Inter-Bank (Other Bank) Transfer
    • Credit Card (VISA) Transfer
    • IMPS Transfer
    • Fixed Deposit
    • Recurring Deposit
    • Call Us
  • Bill Payments
    • With Bill
    • Without Bill
    • View Biller
    • Scheduled Bill
  • Top Up/Recharge
    • Coming Soon. This section is not functional as of now.

Overall SBI has done a wonderful job in launching this new mobile application for its banking customers. I will highly recommend all Android mobile users to stop using old application and download ‘State Bank Freedom Plus’ on their mobiles.

Rajasthan Roadways Launches Official App For Bus Ticket Booking On Mobile

RSRTC-logoRajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) has recently launched an Android application to book bus tickets on mobile. Earlier there was facility of booking tickets only from their website. Providing a mobile app is very good initiative specially from a Government department.

Application has good user interface. They have mentioned on the app page on Google Play that the app has been developed according to Android Human Interface Guidelines. The very first step is to register from within the app. The registration form is very short and simple and I did not face any difficulties during registration. I got my login details both via Email and SMS within seconds.

Main sections of the application are as below –

  • Book Tickets
    • Search buses from source to destination.
    • Actual seating layout is presented for choosing seats according to preference.
    • Payment can be done by Credit Card / Debit Card / Net Banking or through Prepaid Wallet
  • My Bookings
    • Cancel Ticket
  • Failed Bookings
    • View Failed Transactions
  • Wallet Credits
    • Payment can be done via Prepaid Wallet as well. Money need to be deposited in designated bank account by Cash/Cheque or by doing a NEFT transfer. After that money deposit information can be send to RSRTC by filling a form in this section.

RSRTC has also developed a RSRTC Mobile App Portal along with the app. All facilities available on the app are also available on the portal except for Ticket Booking.

A lot of people travel to Jaipur from Delhi and vice-versa daily in RSRTC Volvo buses. This app should be useful for passengers specially for visitors traveling to Rajasthan.

‘mPassport Seva’ Application From Ministry of External Affairs

passport-topA passport is mandatory whenever someone is going on a trip abroad. But since last few years, many people who don’t have immediate plan of going abroad are also applying for passport. The major reason behind this is that passport is being used as Identification Document while applying for many government and private services. Till few years back applying for passport was a nightmare for a common citizen as the process was very time taking due to various reasons. To make the process fast and easy, Government of India launched ‘Passport Seva Project’ in 2010 on Public Private Partnership model with Tata Consultancy Services. This brought down delivery time of passport from months to weeks due to process optimization and use of technology.

Passport Seva website ( is the official website of Consular, Passport & Visa Division of Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India which is maintained by Tata Consultancy Services. Division has also launched a mobile application ‘mPassport Seva’ few months back to expand the reach to more citizens. The application is very useful considering the fact that it is being launched by a government department.

There are five sections of the application as below –

  • General Information
    – This section is having information about applying for passport on the website and ‘Passport Seva Kendra’
  • Locate Centre
    – Passport Seva Kendra
    – District Passport Cell
    – Police Station
    – Mission/Post Abroad
    – Passport Office
  • Fee Calculator
    – This section provides application fee information depending upon various factors like fresh or renewal, age, normal/tatkal etc.
  • Status Tracker
    – This is most useful section which allows tracking of passport application as well as the RTI application in relation to the passport
  • Contact Us
    – Information about the Toll Free call center number of Passport Seva

As of now the application is available only for Android mobile phones. Overall the application is good. The application works in full screen mode which hides the notification bar; this is one minor downside of the app.

Kingsoft Office For Linux Added Pivot Table Function In New Update Along With English Website

Kingsoft Office for Linux has got a new version update recently from Alpha 10 to Alpha 11. I introuduced Kingsoft Office (or WPS Office as it is called in China) to Appdunia readers in one of my previous post. Kingsoft Office is a good alternative of MS Office if you are using any distribution of Linux operating system. Apart from the update, new website for Kingsoft Office for Linux has also been launched in English language for international users. Until now there was a website in Chinese language.

One big feature of version Alpha 11 is added support for Pivot Table function. Major changes are as below –

  • Supported PivotTable function in Kingsoft Spreadsheets
  • Improved font matching under Linux
  • Improved appearance of the English interface
  • Disable option for online templates auto-start page
  • Various bug fixes

New version of Kingsoft Office for Linux can be downloaded from newly launched WPS International Community website in English. By launching an international website in English it is evident that Kingsoft software company from China wants to spread its reach. The website has Download page, FAQ page along with a Forum to discuss about the office suite.

SoftMaker FreeOffice For Linux And Windows

When we think of Office Suite, the first thing which comes to our mind is MS Office. There is no doubt about usability and functionality of MS Office but it is a paid software from Microsoft. Also, there is no version available for Linux. When we think about available alternatives, the most common are OpenOffice and its fork LibreOffice. Last month, I wrote about Kingsoft(WPS) Office  which has been  recently launched for Linux. One reader commented on this post mentioning about one another Office Suite called SoftMaker Office.

SoftMaker Office is a product of SoftMaker Software GmbH, a software development company based in Germany. According to their website they are developing office software since their inception in 1987. There are two versions of office suite from SoftMaker; first is SoftMaker Office which is paid and second is SoftMaker FreeOffice which, as implied by the name, is free. Let’s keep our focus on FreeOffice as this is what you will be interested much about.

I downloaded SoftMaker FreeOffice for both Ubuntu and Windows and I have not noticed any difference till date. As like Kingsoft Office, there are three applications in the office suite as below –

  • TextMaker – MS Word alternative for word processing
  • PlanMaker – MS Excel alternative for working with spreadsheets
  • Presentations – MS PowerPoint alternative for making presentations

All three applications are good to use, best part being the compatibility with MS Office. I have opened some fairly complex documents created in MS Office 2010 and SoftMaker FreeOffice displayed these documents almost as it is. In some cases, it was more compatible with MS Office in comparison of Kingsoft Office. Although user interface of Kingsoft Office is much better and beautiful.

Main features of SoftMaker FreeOffice are as below –

  • Can open and save .doc/.xls/.ppt files with great compatibility
  • Can open .docx/.xlsx/.pptx files (For saving you need SoftMaker Office paid version)
  • SmartText – option for creating abbreviations for most used texts i.e. type ASAP for As Soon As Possible
  • Export to PDF
  • Track Changes
  • Comprehensive drawing and image functions
  • On-the-fly Spell checker as you type
  • More than 330 calculation functions
  • 70 different Excel compatible charts
  • Unicode enabled
  • Work with documents in all languages of the world

I am not able to use SoftMaker FreeOffice for much longer time but so far I found it good. It’s good to know that now there are more options for working with Office Suite applications specially for Linux.

Mobile Applications To Find Blood Donors

blood-topBlood is Life. In our day to day life we overlook this fact but we realize this when we actually need blood for ourselves, for family or for relatives. While there is sudden requirement of blood in case of accidents and medical surgeries, in few medical disorders like Cancer and Thalassemia there is an ongoing requirement of blood every month for the whole life of a person. There is no replacement of blood and it can’t be manufactured in science laboratories, at least till now. Blood donation is the only available source of blood.

There is a huge gap between demand and supply of blood specially in countries with huge populations like India. Finding blood donors is also not easy especially if you are new to your living place and don’t have any friend or relative nearby. There are blood banks in most of major hospitals but they also ask for replacement blood donors. Fortunately, there are few people working to overcome this solution with the help of modern technology. There are some websites to find blood donors which have released mobile applications as well.
